Happy End Of The World Year, people!

I'm sorry there hasn't been much updates lately. Most of the art I've been doing nowadays are either for work or freelance, which I'm really excited to show but I'm not able to at the moment or I'll get my ass sued. I thank all of you for still supporting and encouraging me in my growth as an artist. Gonna try and push my boundaries even more this year and hopefully it'll be a bigger adventure than the last

For some updates, I'm made it into Spectrum 18!! :D

And in surprising turn of events, Sid told me that someone posted one of my pieces on 9gag. (Yes, that website is my shameful source of procrastination.)

And since I don't have any actual work to show, I'll end this post with some sketches I've been doing on my freetime.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Been busy with work, life and more work.

Anyway, some commission work. Some creature design stuff for a Rigger TD MFA student back in my old school. This one was a fun one where I experimented with colors. Was inspired by rainforest creatures such as the poison arrow frog.

Idea development sketches and thumbnails.

A random robot doodle, looking just as confused as the dood who drew him.

A random caricature of my friend Isabela. With added moustache cause moustaches make everything awesome.

Some update on stuff I've been working on for my "Legend of Samurai" project:
Tengu- the Tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics.

Kappa ("river-child") are legendary creatures, a type of water sprite found in Japanese folklore.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. Been trying to get used to my work schedule and haven't really been able to find time to create personal art or even blog. (/lameexcuse)

However, I'm being really productive at work so once I'm able to show my work stuff (hopefully end of this year) I can promise you guys there'll be lots to show. :D

Early March I was part of a group gallery show entitled "The Games We Play" held at Nieto Fine Art SF. The show recently ended and I thought of posting some photos from the reception night.

A lot of people attended that night! Way much more than I expected.

Just wanted to let you guys know that two of my artworks will be featured in an upcoming gallery show entitled "The Games We Play". It's my first time taking part in a group gallery show so I'm really excited for it. Also very thankful to PresentCreative for giving me the chance to take part in this event. :D

Description of the show:

'The Games We Play' is the first in a series of art shows designed to showcase the fine artists of the video game industry. The talented individuals who breathe life into these games more often than not have an artistic voice louder than what this industry can handle, and so keep that voice muffled for the sake of popular appeal. This gallery event and showing will broadcast these voices, presenting dozens of works from these extremely talented and now uninhibited artists.

Ok. I know I don't usually post much writing here, but I felt this was pretty art related so that's why it should go here.

Last night was a night of many realizations. Having bad pronunciation was not one of them.

I finally discovered why my sketchbook felt so dead for the past few years. I had totally removed passion out of the equation from my sketches. They were dead boring passionless studies to make myself improve so that I sketch better, or so I can draw better anatomy or perspective.

Last night as I was hanging out with my friends they were all sketching in their sketchbook and I decided to join them, at the same time testing out my new brushpen. (I've never used one before then, and now I don't think I can ever sketch without one) Decided to draw a bunch of robots, and soon it evolved into a bursting forth of my inner voice that I've silenced for so long. I could hear it crying and I wondered to myself, what have I done? and I suddenly had that childlike curiosity to grab any medium I can find and put it down on paper. Markers, brush, highlighters and now I even feel like doing some collage.

Last night I've had more fun sketching than I've had in years. I realised I've just been striving to draw things that would make my portfolio look good, or things that would get me a job. I had not drawn for myself in a long long time.

In a way, this also answered my question as to how I'm going to separate my work from my passion, as there had never been a clear separation between the two.

A few years ago, a friend told me about this technique called "f**k it!", which I found pretty humorous at that time as it involves screaming "f**k it!!" as loud as you can before you begin an artpiece. I sort of understood the connotation of the technique, but never fully grasp it till now.

I guess in short I've learned that this is my sketchbook. I draw what I want. I don't need to care if it's ugly, or if other people don't know what the hell I drew, or if it doesn't look as good as my friends. I'm just gonna have fun.

I don't think I've had this many words in my artblog posts. Ever.

The new years has pretty much been off to a good start for me. Really thankful for it.

I finally managed to snag of this month's issue of ImagineFX which has my art in the FXPose section.

Also received my copy of 3x3 Illustration Annual which I managed to get one of my pieces into.

Finished this big guy a while back but only uploaded it now. Been busy preparing for graduation, sending out stuff, applying for jobs, etc.

I guess this is my last piece of finished work for 2010, and also my final piece as a student(OMG!). A big thanks to all my instructors at AAU. I made it this far thanks to them.

I guess once in a while I should post my work in progress instead of just finished stuff.Supposed to be an elephant-type behemoth. EDIT: Fixed the anatomy thanks to Terryl's critique.
These two below are more stuff for my Legend of Samurai project.
Wanyudo - Wanyūdō is said to take the form of a burning oxcart wheel bearing the tormented face of a man. He is said to guard the gates of Hell and to wander back and forth along the road between this world and the underworld.

This one was done in class, with a photoref provided by my teacher. I actually have more but the paintings haven't dried up yet.
This one was based on a photo my friend Kelly took. She's not doing art for a career, but she sure has a good eye when it comes to photography.

My friend Robert and I were suppose to teach Jackee and Ciaee how to paint with oils, so we did a still life set-up in my house and we did some "demos" and helped them out a bit. Painting still lifes were definitely nostalgic, and it's good to be able to paint without thinking again.

I lovingly titled this piece, "Flower". I'm so deep, I know.

A semi-collab with Robert. He sat in front of my easel and painted the green apple. I still have a lot to work on my strokes. And backgrounds. Ugh.

If I get to have a senior show next time it won't be called "Robots" , it will be called, "Apples and Oranges". Yes.

# 80 Winterbreak Works Pt. 1

First post of the new year, and a few days till Spring semester starts! I bet everyone's excited and anticipating their classes. So I've been lazy to update, and because of that I decided to do a marathon update of what I did over the winterbreak in a series of daily posts starting from today.

I'll start of with a live painting I did a few weeks back with a bunch of local artists at the Rickshaw Stop. There was around 10 of us painting, and it was a really interesting experience as I've never painted live before.
If you can't tell, I'm the one in the middle. Angeline's to my left, and you guys should bug her to upload hers unto her blog.

This wasn't exactly the final outcome of the night. I actually took it back home, reworked on it, and did some adjustments on photoshop, but yeah, here's the painting. Inspired by my heroes, Jon Foster, Ashley Wood and probably King Kong.

The semester is finally over and I've found the time to compile everything I did for Drawing for Film. This is probably the biggest artdump I'm doing since I started this blog. Another class I learned alot from, despite having tons of work rejected along the way. At the end of the day I realise it was all worth it.
Did I mention I'll be taking this class again next semester?

Here's an early Merry Christmas and a Happy 2010 to everyone! Have a good break! We all deserve it. :)

It was a really fun class and I'm glad I took it with Paul Kratter. Awesome teacher, very awesome landscape painter. I thought I would just be learning how to paint landscapes but I learned so much more than just that. This class made me remember the joys of touching real paint again.

Turned out pretty well I'd say for a first timer. Definitely different from working digitally. Would probably still need to tweak the colours since my camera is having a hard time capturing them right.

It was done on a 16x20" canvas.

An AWESOME "collaboration" between me and my teacher. I started laying things done, he did some awesome stuff to it, and I added some finishing touch. We even signed our names uglily on the top left.

Done at Stow Lake. I really wish I knew how to get rid of glares from oil paintings.

EDIT: So I finally got my internet working on my pc thanks to Caska and Pierre, and suddenly all the colors on my pieces looked screwed up. x__x I'm not sure if this looks weird to you but if it does let me know.. if the robot doesn't look grayish or the sky doesn't look blueish.

So it took me three long years in artschool to FINALLY learn to apply what I learn in traditional paint to my digital paints. *headdesk* but late is better than never I suppose.

This time it's the main antagonist's weather-changing flying machine.

Updating time!

Starting off with some landscapes.

This was done in studio last week, using a photoreference my teacher provided. Ever since I joined this class my aim was to paint snowy mountains! Hopefully we'll get to paint more.

Went to Fort Mason this week to paint. Had a sub. She's nice but I still prefer Paul since he gives more helpful advice.
First one. An hour-ish. Trying to limit my time so I can stay more loose and spontaneous and paint more.

Managed to paint this after lunch. An hour and half-ish.

And finally my Sci-Fi homework this week.
Another creature concept for the Storm Slayer story.
Really liking this class with Stephen Player as he gives the best critiques. Really helping me to improve and push myself further.

First assignment I did for Sci-fi Illustration. A creature concept for the story Storm Slayer.
It's up on display at Powell btw. :D :D One of my lifelong dreams finally fulfilled. Lol. I have such low expectations of myself. I think it tipped over though. Ugh.

First plein-air painting. Went to the Conservatory of Flowers at Golden Gate Park.

Second week of plein air. Went to Lafayette Reservoir.

And this is me learning how to draw ~~manga~~ magna on Youtube. It's much harder to do it than it looks.

This semester, I started using a really tiny sketchbook I got while I was back home in Malaysia... and I realised. I prefer using a tiny sketchbook more than I do a bigger. It's so much more fun and all you need to do is one drawing and the page is filled! (Amazing feeling for people like me who MUST have the page filled before moving on to the next page) So.. here they are, scribbles on the little sketchbook.. in unchronological order.

Lololol. After being ded for so long I decided to update stuff here. Heidi asked me to show her how I do my digital paintings from scratch so I thought "why not?" At first I thought of just doing a simple one day piece but I got carried away and decided to expand on it. It's still a WIP.

Cliche theme of dragon meets man.. but peoeple who know me know I never touch fantasy before so yeah.. expanding my horizon. That is all folks. Will update from time to time. Here are the first 2 wips. First wip at the bottom for easy viewing when seen with future updated posts.

My Ill3 final, those of you who took Clothed Figure 2 with me would probably remember the sketch.

Definitely has been a great semester despite the numerous breakdowns and burnouts. Felt I really have grown alot, in terms of technique, thinking and endurance. I should just name my story that instead of Wreckdiver.. since I unknowingly came up with a whole world and setting based on that movie without knowing it. Nope. I did not watch Waterworld until my friend told me about it when I was telling another friend about my story.Trying out the stylized look.
An awesome sketch collab between Petur, Robert and me. The theme was Urban Fantasy so I started out with a guy with a magic suitcase.. and after going through the two of them, it became a magic suitcase that shoots out big haired men in underwears...

Second and last Illustrator assignment. Yey. Now I have a love/hate relationship with vectors.

These are awesome collaborations our sketch-o-rama last week at Borders with Petur, Ed and Kelly. We did this thing where we all start drawing something in our sketchbook for around 5 minutes or so, and then we pass our sketchbook to the person sitting to our left or our right, and draw on whoever's sketchbook that come to us, and we keep repeating the process until it reaches a full circle.

These 2 are from Petur's sketchbook. For some odd reason the ones in Petur's sketchbook always comes out the most awesome while the rest of the us just seem to end up with things pretty random.
Totally love this one. It started off with Petur drawing the guy with the gun, me continuing with mr. snakewormhead, Kelly drawing the little girl and Ed finishing off with a midget. In my eyes, it was perfect.

This one's awesome too. Petur started off with mountain soldier guy, Ed drawing the dog, Kelly adding people and me adding the yetis.

Anyway, remember how I said our sketchbook always end up with things random? Well, here's mine.
Told you so. The other one is just too horrifying for me to even post it up. It might scar your eyes. No kidding. Though Petur, Kelly and Ed still wants me to post it up I know.

So while doing research for my noah's ark pieces I stumbled upon this photo. I thought it was pretty scary.. and interesting too. And I decided to play around with it in photoshop.

And I came up with this....
I think it's pretty cute.. in a scary way.

In Ill3 today, we were asked to paint portraits for practice. As usual, it's hard for Pierre, Angeline and I to take it too seriously.

So mine ended up with Dimitry(from Darkstalker) and Vegeta's lovechild. The sketch was of Gokulo but I thought of doing otherwise.

And we were done pretty early and Angeline started messing around with hers by adding dialogue boxes... and I followed. and one thing led to the next and this was what the 3 of us ended up with. It was done in real time between our 3 monitors. Angeline compiled and animated it and turned it into this....

A personal piece of work for portfolio's sake. I'm starting to realise doing a clean lineart before colouring in photoshop cuts down my working time by half.
I wish people would hire me just to draw robots in the future but I know that's far from the reality that I'll face. Time to start practicing drawing trees, rocks and doorknobs.

Stuff from Adv. Persp. The lack of idea and good concepts behind these disturb me. Jellyfishes in space was fun though.

We did some themed sketching. One was Civil war star wars.. uh.. yeah. So there's Jedi Lincoln.
Next themed sketch was Dragonball. Vegeta should be in the movie. And this is how he should look like in the movie IMHO.
Speaking of Dragonball.. a sketch done in Painter in class in ILL3. Goku and Picolo's son.. GOKULO! GOING SUPER SAIYAN YO!!!11!!!1!

For Joko's class. Noah's ark again. Don't feel like I did well this time in terms of design for the first one. Oh well. Was expecting Joko to point out the horrible perspective in mine but he apparently didn't. Woohoo.

I know. Noah's awesome. And I need to work on my sketching.

A piece of work I did for a team that's making a game and they want to promote their stuff at Wondercon. Wasn't my lineart but I did the colour work.

See. See. It's there at the Academy booth! Wish I had more time to put more work to refine it though. Oh well.

A robot sketch I did while we were at Borders after dinner just hanging out. Can't remember the last time I had fun drawing. Neither can I remember the last time I sketched on the sketchbook. Feels good to draw something I love again. And yes, that's a zombie boy. He loves your brains.

Returning home with my loot. A pretty good bargain I'd say. Got them all for $25. Poster was free of course. XD Finally got my hands on The Tumor. It's awesome and I definitely recommend it.

And before I go I just have to add this...

I believe in the theory that having Petur's photo on my blog will make it 1000x more awesome. Not to mention this is also a picture of Petur giving TWO thumbs-up. TWO! Surely it's beyond awesome now.

First ILL3 homework. Icons. First time using Illustrator. It's kinda fun when it's not giving you pain. The first one is the first set of sketches I did, but Robert opted for the cuter renditions because the former was too complicated. He's right. I'll probably die trying to vectorize them.

Gasp! A post with no pictures! Just wanted to record a dream I had last night. I can't believe I dream of school even during break =__=. Dreamt the semester started and was in Chuck Pyle's class. Met a bunch of friends, found it funny his class wasn't at Bradley Hall but in one of them Illustration classes type class and I forgot to bring my clothed figure 2 portfolio to show him. =__=

I've been having weird dreams lately.

This is probably the first time I started an assignment 24 hours before the deadline and finished it. Had to go through alot of pain to get it done but I did it. With a lot of help from Kelly. I owe you rong time. And no thanks to stupid library scanners and stupid macs that wouldn't allow me to transfer stuff to my harddrive.

Aaaaand I'm done with all my work for the semester. Kthxbai.

P.S: I find it kinda funny how I have two Alice in Wonderland related homework assignments from 2 different classes. Not to mention finding out that Tim Burton is making a new AIW movie.

Started this sketch a few weeks ago but hated it cuz it looked like Final Fantasy's generic dragoon. But after Iain "Awesome" McCaig's talk I decided to go back to it and give it another try.

Definitely happier with the overall looks now. Gonna try and finish him up in between homeworks. Try.

HUZZAH. Finally an update.
I was invited to illustrate one of the booklet pages for a anime/comic convention back home. So this was what I came up with.
I was suppose to illustrate their mascots, these 2 anime characters named Coffy and Tea, in my own style. Well, since I don't exactly have a style I might as well turn them into robots.

So I've not been updating for a while. Got a parttime job/unofficial internship/whatever at some local animation company. Office has no intrawebs. THE AGONY. Oh painful agony. but working there has given me a chance to experiment alot, especially with enviroments and the cuter side of conceptart.
Doodled this either last week or the week before at the office. Have a lot more doodles but they feel a lot more unfinished compared to this. Oh well.

Something I did to procrastinate from doing my int. anatomy final, which I hate with a passion at the moment. I have a love-hate relationship with this guy.

This was from a speedpaint session with other bunch of people from back home. Theme was "Awakening Legacy." Go figure >_> 1 hr.

A character much inspired by and dedicated to Carmen for always being a big help to me. His name is Count Flyaway Daisy the Thirteenth.

Been feeling rather uninspired by all the schoolwork and tight renderings lately. So I decided to do something that requires less thinking and less rendering. This picture has a lot of flaws, and the design makes no sense whatsoever, but I say screw all that cause I just want to have fun painting something for once.

Did these soon after. Was experimenting with the watercolour brush in Photoshop. Not sure if I managed to pull off the watercolour look on these, but they were fun to do.

Don't come easy to me. Especially not in figure drawing classes. But today is one of those rare days where I actually like what I'm doing in my figure drawing class.

Somehow I feel I'm improving a whole lot more in Intermediate Anatomy this semester, rather than Intermediate Fig. Drawing last semester. And I've concluded it's because I have much more freedom to experiment with my medium and style, and I don't have the worst figure drawing teacher *cough* Paul Gibson *cough* forcing me to draw zebramen, trex fingers and cheesefeets.

I like long poses cause it really relaxes my mind and I could play around with charcoal like it's paint. These aren't great, but I guess they're pretty much the best I've done.

Something I liked from heads and hands1 yesterday. A 40 minute drawing.

Some sketchbook stuff, from Myth and Symbols class. Yeah, I've been productive, at the wrong time. I kind of realised I've been using the same design element for armors waaay too much now. Gotta break out of the habit. Gwah.

Decided to add a quick splash of colour to one of the sketches.I really liked how it came out. Sadly I coloured the lowres file. Whoopdeedo.

Been slacking. I know I shouldn't. But yeah. Had things to settle and all. Shouldn't be an excuse though. Anyway, here's to a good new year to all you AAU peeps.

Coloured in one of the sketches earlier for practice. Prolly around half an hour, didn't keep track. As you can see I've really gotten rusty after one month of not drawing anything.

From Int. Anatomy. As rusty as I am, I still think this is pretty good compared to the stuff I did last semester in Paul "cheesefeeted 3-fingered zebraman" Gibson's class.

From Illustration 1, used the crow quilt. As frustrating as it is to use it, the results are pretty satisfactory. These measure 3x3 inches each.

A character that I've thought up for quite a while, but only got down to sketching him while I was trying to persuade Elisha to follow me to the library today, which I failed miserably.

I realised I've never drawn fat or skinny guys. So yeah, was trying them out. And uh, that top one's supposed to be my friend, Pierre. He asked me to draw him as an emo.

Went to Grace Cathedral for a class trip on Tuesday. First time there, pretty cool place. Decided to try using ballpoint pens.

Chris DeLeon came over last night and we had a little drink and draw session. I seem to be drawing a lot of chainsaws for some odd reason.
